<image:caption>This railroad track had multiple indicators of not being in use. For one thing, it’s part of a city park that has historic markers talking about it’s past usage. Another indicator is the lack of polish on the rails. But perhaps the best indication is that it’s actually physically broken. Even so, I took this photo standing off to the side of the track.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is my car, a Mazda BT-50. North American readers will know it as a pickup truck. Here, we call a vehicle like this a ute. No matter what you call it, it’s equipped with four wheel drive, an extended range fuel tank, all terrain tires, a canopy, and other features that suit it for exploring rough roads. There have been times when the roads have been so rough that I’ve had to hold my dog so they don’t shake her to the ground. Take this, and not a passenger sedan, to explore rough roads.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This view is taken from the Victorian highlands. You can only get there by taking an unsealed road along the side of a mountain in the Great Dividing Range. The road sees little maintenance and is usually quite rough. It’s a rough road that leads to a beautiful place.</image:caption>

Situations where wildlife has become habituated to humans leaving food sources along roadways only increases the chances of those habituated individuals becoming victims of vehicle strikes. <image:caption>While driving down Highway 101 in Northern Oregon, out of nowhere was this dahlia farm, and again, I just pulled off to the side of the road and photographed this image out of my car window. By driving around on roads, you just never know what you may find.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This image was captured from me sitting in the car and photographing out the window while driving in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. The dramatic clouds compelled me to stop safely on the side of the road and take this picture.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Responsible Roadside Photography: What You Should Know - The fifth tip is to leave no trace. Sometimes as a roadside photographer you may come upon a field of flowers or sunflowers on some rural road, and you decide to set up a tripod and camera. You should still be respectful of the boundaries and also be respectful of the flowers by not traipsing into the field of flowers, trampling or breaking the flowers, but staying safely on the side of the road. You should remain on the road with your camera equipment and tripod and be able to take amazing photos from alongside the roadway. When you have your camera gear out of your car on the side of the road taking pictures, you should be mindful to respect nature by leaving no garbage or trace of your having been there. You should leave the area as you found it.</image:title>
<image:caption>This field of sunflowers was discovered while I was on a trip to a rural area in Arkansas. In this case I safely pulled over to the side on road. I photographed this agriculture field using my tripod while standing along the side of the road.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Responsible Roadside Photography: What You Should Know - The second tip is to avoid trespassing on private property. Whether they have a ‘No Trespassing’ sign or not, as responsible photographer you should not trespass on private property. If you cross that right-of-way boundary or jump over a fence, and you do not have permission from the property owner, then you are trespassing.</image:title>

<image:caption>Because of the sensitive nature of this location, the California Coastal Commission closes off Casa Beach for five months per year, in order to give the seals space to give birth and raise their pups safely. Although this works out great for the Harbor Seals that give birth on that beach, not all seals choose that location for the critical moment. South Casa beach, which is located just around the corner, is not part of this beach closure, and is also a popular location for seals to give birth. Because of the lack of restrictions, it is up to individuals to monitor and self-regulate this beach. On February 18, 2020 I watched as a Harbor Seal in La Jolla's South Casa Beach delivered a seal pup. South Casa Beach is not part of the Children's Pool Beach closure which left her and the pup susceptible to human caused disturbance.</image:caption>

A slow shutter speed plus some intentional camera movement combine to give it a wispy, almost painting-like character. Raised around the park’s roads and visitors, they have little fear of people at this time. As it is, many of these “front country raised” cubs end up being put down by wildlife service when, as two or three year olds they seek easier calorie sources from human development.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Two reddish egrets court and the female aggressively takes the offered nesting material from the male. This image was taken from a boat off the shoreline of a rookery island in San Antonio Bay (TX). Utilizing a Tamron 150-500mm for Sony e-mount on a Sony A1 allowed for ethical photography conditions and close-up images of the activity. This image was further cropped in post-production to really allow the viewer to experience the moment between these two birds.</image:caption>

This was taken while standing on the shoulder of a back road at the corner of a large field. I rarely, if ever, include people’s personal homes or buildings as this can be viewed as intrusive even if it is not illegal. Captured with the Sony A1 and Tamron 50-400mm for Sony e-mount.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A mine operated here from 1889 to 1920. Reclamation began in 1995. It only partly succeeded. The foreground shows a marker indicating a mine shaft was sealed here. In the background, grassy areas where no trees will grow show where tailings from the mill are buried. The nearby creek is still acidic. This is the type of damage that can be done when sustainability is not a consideration. And it shows how difficult repairing the damage can be. Reducing, reusing, and recycling allow us to reduce the number of spoiled places.</image:caption>
